Service Providers

Report stolen cell-phones to your service provider at the following numbers:

  • Cell C: 140 from a Cell C phone, or 084-140 from another phone.
  • MTN: 173 for prepaid users, or 808 for contract users, both from an MTN phone, or 083-1173 from another phone.
  • Vodacom: 111 from a Vodacom phone, or 082-111 from another phone.

If Your Cellphone is Lost or Stolen ...

You will probably be liable for any phone calls made with your SIM card, so to prevent unauthorised use thereof, phone the service provider’s call centre immediately and ask them to block your SIM card.

Also instruct your service provider to blacklist the cellphone - you will need the IMEI number for this. Blacklisting prevents the phone from being used on any of the networks in the country.

Ensure that you obtain a blacklisting reference number from the service provider and record this number as you will need it later.

The Interception and Monitoring Act came into effect on 30th June 2006. This requires you to report the theft or loss of the cellphone and/or SIM card at a police station. You will need your ID number, the SIM card phone number, the IMEI number, and the blacklisting reference number obtained from your service provider. Ensure that you obtain a SAPS case number.

If the cellphone is insured and you intend submitting a claim, report the incident to the insurance company. They will also request the blacklisting reference number and the SAPS case number.
